Description

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is looking for a senior Climate Change Mitigation Lead to join its Energy team and to grow its Canada and North America-based portfolio of work. The innovative and multi-disciplinary Energy Program is one of IISD’s five core programs and seeks to support the transformation of energy policy frameworks and systems to provide greater access to low carbon energy consistent with broader development aspirations of all countries. It does so by delivering quality analytical services and pioneering research and acting as an “honest broker” to between various actors, both in developed and developing countries.

The position is based in Winnipeg or Ottawa and the starting date is expected to be in the Spring 2016.

Tasks

  • Research, analysis and influence: Conduct policy and economic analyses on various aspects of climate change mitigation, including carbon pricing mechanisms and other types of policies, and develop written reports and products for a range of audiences (e.g. governments and corporations).  Devise and implement influencing strategies.
  • Business development: Design project proposals and manage the fundraising process for research projects related to climate change mitigation in Canada and North America more generally.
  • Project direction and management: Direct and manage projects, including but not limited to supervising IISD personnel and external consultants, controlling budgets, and managing client relationships.
  • Partnership building: Develop and maintain a network of partners including individuals from intergovernmental organizations, governments, civil society organizations, the private sector and academia across Canada, and North America more generally.
  • Outreach and communications: Work with IISD personnel, including the communications team, in devising strategies and products for disseminating and sharing IISD climate change mitigation work.
  • Issue tracking: Follow on-going provincial, national and international climate change processes.
  • Representation: Attend and speak on behalf of IISD at provincial, national and North American conferences and events.

 

 

Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of climate change and energy policy in Canada and the US;
  • Knowledge of related areas, such as the electricity sector and green economy issues considered a key advantage.
  • Proven and immediately applicable experience in fundraising.
  • Established network of contacts.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement policy-oriented research projects from start to finish
  • Experience in conducting economic analyses (both technical and quantitative) is an asset.
  • Ability to present and communicate to a variety of audiences, governments and private sector firms.
  • Line management experience or ambition to acquire such experience.
  • Positive work attitude and ability to work in an international research team as well as independently.
  • Flexibility to take on tasks ranging from highly complex to basic in nature.
  • Results-focused, ability to work under tight deadlines, prioritise tasks, and work quickly and accurately.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in economics, engineering, natural sciences or other relevant discipline.
  • At least eight years of work experience, most of which on energy and climate change issues.
  • Excellent written and spoken English and working knowledge of French.
  • Fluency in French would be an asset.
  • Strong and current network of high value to IISD.
  • Ability to travel, including overseas.
