POSITION DESCRIPTION Position: Climate Change Campaigner Reporting to: Climate Change Program Manager Location: Negotiable in Sydney, Melbourne or Canberra Grade: 5 Salary: $79,280 (including superannuation) Status: Temporary, 12 month position Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
BACKGROUND ACF is working to avoid dangerous climate change through widespread awareness of the threats posed by climate change and positive recognition of our ability to respond to it; local, national and international commitment and action to urgently cut greenhouse gas emissions; increased energy efficiency and significant reliance on renewable energy; and widespread community support for a nuclear-free Australia and recognition that nuclear power is not a solution to climate change.
ACF has worked with a wide cross section of Australians, including progressive business, the tourism industry, the rural and health sectors, aid and development groups, and the broader community to call for early government action to stop greenhouse pollution.
The position will work within a team managed by the Climate Change Program Manager.
POSITION PURPOSE Advocate for strong government responses to address dangerous climate change. This will involve engaging allies, partners, supporters and advocates of ACF’s climate change campaign along with undertaking climate and energy policy research, government and public advocacy work as required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1. As part of the Climate Change program team, develop and implement a campaign program on climate change, engaging allies, partners and advocates to encourage active participation in climate change campaigning. 2. Translate ACF policy objectives into appropriate liaison materials (e.g. correspondence and briefing papers) for politicians, government officials, business people and other key stakeholders and audiences. 3. Undertake government advocacy work on behalf of ACF. 4. Undertake high-level climate and energy policy research and prepare reports and submissions. 5. Liaise with environmental organisations working on similar or related issues and develop a role for ACF appropriate to its national status. 6. Liaise, brief and work with community organisations on climate change and energy related issues to advance ACF’s campaign goals. 7. Collaborate with ACF’s Communications staff to ensure effective coordination of ACF public messages and positioning, and promote ACF to the media, target audiences and the public on topics relevant to the campaign. 8. Collaborate with ACF Marketing staff to ensure effective supporter engagement in order to promote discourse, behaviour change, participation in advocacy and financial support for ACF’s climate change goals and campaigns. 9. Work with ACF senior management, other campaigners and program teams, and across the broader organisation to deliver program goals. 10. Other duties as required by the Climate Change Program Manager.
Experience, skills and personal attributes required: • Strong appreciation of and commitment to the vision and values of ACF. • Demonstrated experience working in climate policy. • Proven ability to develop strategic alliances. • Demonstrated campaign, advocacy and project management experience. • Working knowledge of the processes of government • Extensive experience in building effective public engagement networks and partnerships. • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and liaise and work with community representatives and organisations. • Excellent written and oral communication skills including demonstrated analytical and report writing skills. • Proven ability to represent ACF publicly through media and public speaking events. • The ability to work autonomously and contribute to a high performing team • Relevant tertiary qualifications would be an advantage
