Description |
BACKGROUND The conservation of biological diversity through the establishment and management of National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries is now globally recognized. Conservation today is not only important through such Protected Areas (PAs) but also significant in adjoining managed forests and habitations. Forestry is certainly an appropriate professional background for managing India’s National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries yet this background alone is not sufficient. Agencies managing PAs require appropriate knowledge and skills in all aspects of wildlife and PA management. Hence, the Certificate Course in Wildlife Management was started in the year 1985 and 26 such courses have so far been completed. OBJECTIVES Scientific management of National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries requires professional inputs from personnel at the Range Forest Officer level or equivalent ranks. This level of staff is assigned a wide array of tasks like conducting wildlife population estimation, organizing anti-poaching operations, assisting in research, recording visitor statistics and dealing with the public. The 3-month Certificate Course aims to train such staff in practical day-to-day management of the National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries. This is achieved by imparting knowledge in the basics of biodiversity and wildlife conservation, understand the Management Plan prescriptions and learn techniques to implement them. DURATION Duration of the course is 3 months covering one academic session from 1st November 2011 to 31st January 2012. ELIGIBILITY The course is meant for in-service foresters of the rank of Range Forest Officers or equivalent. Admissions will be made on a `first-come-first served’ basis subject to fulfilling of the laid down eligibility criteria.
