POSITION SUMMARY

The Central Ohio Conservation Project Manager directs some or all aspects of protection, science, stewardship and community relations for Central Ohio conservation activities. The Project Manager is responsible for management of the Big Darby Headwaters Preserve and five other preserves found in the region. Working with Conservancy colleagues and conservation partners, the Project Manager establishes overall conservation vision and priorities for Central Ohio, and develops and implements a broad array of conservation strategies aimed at abating threats with a primary focus on conserving the streams, wetlands and surrounding lands of the region. The Project Manager will also move forward new initiatives to increase cooperation with both public and private stakeholders, including improving youth engagement, with some potential for urban conservation work. The Central Ohio Conservation Project Manager is based at The Nature Conservancy’s Dublin office and reports to the Ohio Director of Conservation. The Project Manager is a principal contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, and the academic community in Central Ohio.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Leads efforts, with direction of the Ohio Conservation Director, to identify conservation priorities and strategies in the area of responsibility
• Manage preserves including contract and volunteer work for the Big Darby Headwaters Preserve and five smaller preserves (Agnes Andreae, Commercial Point Riffles, Stillfork Swamp, Brown’s Lake Bog & Betsch Fen)
• Considers and develops strategic, implementable concepts for youth engagement/future urban conservation initiative in Central Ohio
• Initiates and implements conservation work to establish the Conservancy as a major conservation partner within the area of responsibility
• Develops key partnerships with public and private organizations in order to identify, communicate, and support the implementation of solutions and best practices
• Helps to identify and secure funding for conservation in Central Ohio, primarily through public grant writing and assisting philanthropy staff with donor engagement
• May lead and manage teams to support and improve conservation efforts
• Builds strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field
• Develops innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools, and frameworks to address the natural system needs
• Engages local land use planners, community and partners to enlist support for local conservation efforts
• Negotiates complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and landowners to conserve and protect natural communities
• Represents The Nature Conservancy to important stakeholders, for example by speaking to the media, making presentations, conducting field trips, or participating in other events, as needed

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

• Programmatic scope will require work and relationships with staff and partners from multiple jurisdictions.
• Will be responsible for contributing to larger state and regional projects.
• No current staff, but may be asked to supervise staff or volunteers to support and improve conservation efforts.
• Establish and maintain optimal standards of performance for the department or program while controlling costs and administering budgets.
• Responsible for ensuring that public and private funds are raised to meet program needs.
• Builds cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals
• May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
• Frequently makes independent decision based on analysis, experience, and judgment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
• Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
• Experience developing partnerships (partners, community, government.
• Negotiation skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 5-7 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans.
• Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and regions.
• Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives.
• Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
• Demonstrated experience in fundraising.
• Politically savvy and experienced in partnership development (partners, community, government)
