Friends of the Earth Europe is seeking a:

CAMPAIGNER

to work on the issue of resource use

Full time and working in the FoEE office in Brussels

Friends of the Earth campaigns for sustainable and just societies and for the protection of the environment. Profile of the position

The campaigner will work to enable FoEE (organisation and network) to progress towards our vision of a more sustainable and just society by maximising opportunities to leverage change within the area of resource use. The campaigner will work in the FoEE Resource Use and Consumption Programme under supervision of a Programme coordinator based in London. The person will work with FoEE member groups active in the issue as well as external partners. In the office s/he will collaborate closely with colleagues from other FoEE programmes.

Goals and responsibilities include:
Campaign management and member groups' involvement

  • Agree campaign goals, main strategies and areas of work with the Programme Coordinator, based on the strategic plan
  • Develop the campaign strategy and activities with member groups and relevant partners and deliver upon them
  • Plan and manage/deliver a programme of research a) on the issue, b) the political context and c) about the target audience to identify campaign opportunities
  • Develop and deliver an annual work plan and report on its delivery
  • Build relationships with issue specific policy makers and EU officials
  • As part of the overall campaign strategy, agree with the Programme Coordinator a list of organisations the campaign should partner with and work with our allies
  • Coordinate small research projects and manage consultants as agreed with Programme Coordinator
  • Evaluate annual outputs and whether progress is being made towards the campaign outcome
  • Work closely with FoEE member groups and enhance their involvement in the campaign, specifically inform the network about relevant policy developments on EU level and enable them to do campaign work on them through capacity building, policy briefings and draft lobby materials

Public communication

Working closely with the Communications team to maximise campaign communications:

  • Build relationships with issue specific journalists and journals and be a spokesperson on the issue of resource use upon request of the Programme Coordinator
  • Produce excellent news releases in keeping with FoEE policy and guidelines
  • Work closely with the Communications & Events Officer to design and deliver actions and events

Budget and budgeting and fundraising support

  • Draft and manage the allocated campaign budget in line with FoEE finance policy and donor requirements and in close cooperation with FoEE Finance Department
  • Authorise campaign payments/ purchases up to the agreed threshold limit
  • Support their Programme Coordinator and Head of Fundraising in fundraising for the campaign, including:
    - Drafting donor application documentation, reports, evaluations, other briefings and updates as required
    - Meeting with/making presentations to, funders as required

Team membership

  • Be directly accountable in detail to the Programme Coordinator and dedicated line-manager
  • Participate actively in Programme and organisational processes, meetings and events
  • Give and receive constructive feedback and support to/from FoEE colleagues

 Requirements

  • Committed to FoEE’s vision, mission and values
  • Able to demonstrate a personal commitment to sustainable development and environmental justice
  • A good command of English, which is the working language for this post
  • Able to demonstrate a significant body of campaign experience, preferably environment related at EU or national level, in either paid or voluntary capacity
  • Knowledgeable about the campaign issue or able to quickly assimilate it • Knowledgeable about EU institutions, their functioning and legislative process
  • Proven record of project management including planning, implementation, budget handling and evaluation
  • Able to analyse and simplify complex policy issues and documents for a wide range of audiences, including non-technical, and able to present complex policy issues so they are understandable by a wide variety of audiences
  • Able to communicate complex issues in relevant language to a variety of audiences
  • Excellent public presentation skills
  • Preparedness to work as part of a campaign and Programme team
  • Able to work independently and as part of a campaign and Programme team
  • Able to work to deadlines and prioritise workloads
  • Significant experience of facilitating successful internal and external meetings
  • Able to travel abroad, sometimes for trips of several days and to undertake occasional evening and weekend work
  • Able to develop relationships with other stakeholders from EU institutions, media, business, think tanks, other NGOs

 Desirable

  • Knowledgeable on the issue of resource use (including waste policy), resource measurement and approaches to reducing resource use
  • Have a background in NGO or voluntary activities
  • Ability to speak one or more of the other EU languages
  • Two years environmental campaigning experience at a pan-European level
  • An established reputation and network of contacts within the issue and/or relevant institutions
  • Ability to /experience of supervising interns

The position requires occasional evening and weekend work as well as occasional international travel.

Salary between Euro 2.460 and 2.660 gross, depending on experience, plus benefits (13th month, luncheon vouchers, pension scheme and hospitalisation insurance). Conditions are according to Belgian legislation including the legal ability to live and work in Belgium.
