Description

As a member of the EU campaign team, reporting to the Director of IFAW’s EU office, the Campaign Officer/EU Trade Policy will develop strategic input at the EU level for IFAW’s priority campaigns and provide technical and legal expertise for implementing campaigns in Europe.  This EU staff member will also work with IFAW colleagues globally to develop international strategies and coordinated campaigns.  The Campaign Officer/EU Trade Policy will focus on EU policies on external trade and trade-related issues which have an impact on animals and will work to influence these policies to ensure animal welfare benefits.


Accountabilities/Responsibilities

  • Work with IFAW’s EU Director and European Campaigns Director to identify objectives related to the EU’s policies on trade and development and implement agreed strategies to influence EU policy for the benefit of animal welfare and conservation, focusing on IFAW’s agreed priorities.
  • Provide strategic input to IFAW’s global teams on the EU’s external trade policies and the EU’s global commitments, in order to inform the planning and development of IFAW’s key international campaigns and projects.
  • Assess evolving EU trade and development policies and related international commitments and how these are being implemented.
  • Research and produce briefings, and assist in the development of campaign materials appropriate for political and public audiences, on the impact of EU trade policies on animal welfare.
  • Establish good communications with key politicians and decision-makers involved in the development and implementation of EU policy on external trade related issues.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with other animal welfare and development groups and the private sector where appropriate.
  • Represent IFAW at political and public events as required and in collaboration with the EU Communications Officer develop and implement a relevant external communications strategy.
  • Provide input into IFAW’s current and long term development and fundraising strategies and initiatives.

Job Requirements

  • Degree in European law, international trade law, European Affairs or equivalent qualifications preferred.
  • Good knowledge of EU and international trade law and global commitments.
  • Understanding of animal welfare and wildlife conservation issues.
  • Professional experience of at least three years in European affairs preferably with a focus on trade and development policy.
  • Capacity to plan strategically and to prioritise.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal, with the ability to influence and motivate others.
  • Ability to work in an international environment in a way that promotes collaboration and integration.
  • Ability to work independently, to manage time and meet deadlines.
  • Solid computer skills with basic Microsoft business applications.
  • Fluency in English and at least one other EU language essential, together with multi-cultural awareness.
  • Willingness to travel internationally.
  • Understanding and acceptance of the need for confidentiality.
