18/07/14 - 21/07/14
This course provides an introduction to moths and butterflies, their ecology and habitats. The initial emphasis will be on aids to identification in the field, e.g. by recognising key features and the different families. Field techniques will be explained, with plenty of chances to go moth trapping at night (it should also be possible to use sugar techniques) and to look at different butterfly habitats by day. The previous night's catch will be examined the next morning, with plenty of chances of photography. Survey and monitoring methods will be demonstrated for those who want to take the study a bit further.
