BRinK is a local research and conservation initiative providing affordable and long-term research opportunities and collaborations to students and scientists.
 The immediate challenge in Southern Africa to protect biodiversity is to avoid degradtation of habitat in the area that is and was used for lifestock farming. Our ambition is to study, find solutions and protect the environment through scientific research. We use Kuzikus reserve as a case study to demonstrate a win-win situation for people and nature on marginal land on the farm-level in Namibia. The economic retruns of sustainable farming with locally-adapted wildlife is sought to exceed returns of cultivation or lifestock farming in marginal land like the Kalahari Desert. Our vision on Kuzikus is to restore and protect arid savanna without loosing livelihoods for the people.
BRinK builds a research station in Kuzikus reserve to be used by scientists and student projects, who are able to conduct research on arid savanna and benefit from local know-how through personal contact and direct involvement in the practical part of wildlife managemen and conservation. Student projects run by BRinK scientists collect data in collaboration with external institutions as well as data to describe patterns of biodiversity and ecological processes in Kuzikus reserve. Through our public awareness and tourism programme we aim to reach people outside the scientific world.
