Corporate Steering Functions including Strategy & Corporate Affairs, Human Resources, Chief Information Office and Finance provide critical support to the business units
Reporting to the Biodiversity Manager, the Biodiversity Officer will assist in the implementation of biodiversity management systems and initiatives consistent with legal and best practice standards to meet company sustainability targets.
The role holder will lead the day to day management of NG’s non-operational land with the support of the environmental land management outsourced team and under the overall guidance of the Biodiversity Manager, taking into account information from a number of sources to make decisions and find resolutions to issues meeting operational and biodiversity objectives. The role holder will also support the Biodiversity Manager is providing advice on biodiversity issues to other parts of the business.
They will engage with regulators, partners and other stakeholders and provide instructions to the outsourced team ensuring their delivery to specification and programme.
The Biodiversity Officer will refer issues of a more sensitive or complex nature to the Biodiversity Manager but will deputise for the Biodiversity Manager in his/her absence.
Importantly, the role will involve regular travel throughout the UK particularly to EDF Energy’s power station sites.
Lead the day-to-day management of the Nuclear Generation (NG) sites
Assist with the sustainable management of all of the company’s rural estate with the support of the property outsourced team, including granting of Farm Business Tenancies and Profit à Prendres, Single Payment Scheme and ESA/ELS/HLS/WGS grant applications
Critically review and assess and then implement Integrated Land Management Plans to meet the needs of the business as well as objectives for landscape, biodiversity, land use, historical environment and community. On occasion the role holder will also be required to write Integrated Land Management Plans
Implement the Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) for the function including baseline surveys, assessment of impacts, objectives and targets and performance monitoring
Assist the Biodiversity Manager with the delivery of ecological, landscape and amenity mitigation and compensation schemes for Nuclear New Build (NNB) including creation and on-going management of habitats
Assist the Biodiversity Manager in providing biodiversity advice and support to other parts of the EDF Energy business
Engage and consult with external stakeholders including local planning authorities, statutory agencies and conservation bodies
Review and approve written reports to be sent to the Local Authorities.
Implement and maintain internal and external communication processes to promote partnership working, biodiversity issues and report on the company’s biodiversity performance
Chair land management meetings involving key land management partners and stakeholders to review land management/biodiversity progress and lessons learnt
Attend environmental/biodiversity working group meetings
Assist with the management of the company’s landholdings compliant with the best practice standards of the Biodiversity Benchmark ensuring biodiversity is integrated with the company’s environmental management systems
Prepare evidence for Biodiversity Benchmark and ISO14001 audits, participate in and in some cases, lead those audits on behalf of EDF Energy and undertake internal compliance evaluations
Provide comments on government and other consultations on biodiversity’s legislation and policies
Ensure the environmental land management work is undertaken in line with company values and in particular to ensure health, safety and environmental compliance (including tree risk assessments)
Assist with the contract management of EDF Energy’s outsourced environmental land management consultants, providing instruction and monitoring delivery
Assist with the preparation and monitoring of annual budgets for environmental land management, maintaining an awareness of the budget when approving work
Provide biodiversity and compliance advice to operational functions, such as NNB and NG
Honours Degree (or equivalent) in Ecology, Biology, Geography or similar as a minimum
A member of RICS, CIEEM,IEMA or similar qualification
Clean driving licence
Demonstrates a good knowledge and solid, proven experience of:
Environmental management systems
Wildlife conservation and habitat management
EU and UK wildlife legislation and the roles of the main regulatory and conservation bodies
Biodiversity Action Plans
Must achieve Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP) status for biodiversity in compliance with EDF Energy Nuclear Generation’s management systems
