The Ashden Awards Conference 2011: Clean energy – power to change lives

  • • 2011 Ashden Award finalists
  • • Jonathon Porritt, Forum for the Future
  • • Stephen O’Brien, DFID
  • • Madeleine Bunting, The Guardian

Join senior executives from business, NGOs and academia at the 2011 Ashden Awards Conference to hear about and discuss innovative ideas and practical solutions offered by this year’s Ashden Awards finalists.

The Ashden Awards Conference is unique in bringing together ‘energy champions’ from the UK and the developing world. These experienced, successful practitioners are bringing the benefits of clean energy - improved health, income generation and education opportunities - to the lives of millions.

The morning will be introduced and chaired by Jonathon Porritt of Forum for the Future and will include a debate about Green Deal with panelists Christoph Harwood from Marksman Consulting, Dan Monzani from DECC, David Hall from Behaviour Change and Abigail Burridge from the Local Government Association.

Our 2011 UK finalists will present their work through a mix of films, presentations and panel debates offering a chance to hear in depth what’s working at a local level in the UK. Ashden Award finalists have one goal in common – helping us achieve our emission-reduction targets. With significant changes afoot such as the localism bill, calls for a ‘big society’ and the new energy bill, come and join the debate about what this will mean for the transition to a low carbon economy in the UK.

The afternoon session will be introduced by Stephen O’Brien, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for International Development and chaired by Madeline Bunting from the Guardian. We will hear from our 2011 international finalists, who are improving lives and cutting CO2 emissions through technologies ranging from efficient cook stoves in Africa to biomass schemes in India. With short films about their work, presentations and a Q&A session, this offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from those working in the field. An afternoon panel will discuss the future for local clean energy, with contributions from Steven Hunt at Practical Action, Matthew Lockwood from the Institute of Development Studies, Audrey Selian from Rianta Capital and Mike Mason, founder of Climate Care.

The conference will be of interest to a wide range of people and organisations, including NGOs, politicians, policy makers, academics and students, international development organisations, local government officers, investors and financiers, charitable trusts and foundations.

What did people say about last year’s conference?

“Normally I wouldn't rate everything 5 out of 5 because it becomes meaningless, but I really thought it was all excellent. The size of audience was good - big enough to show the interest, but small enough to start conversations.”

“This event is an eye-opener. For me, a great way to connect to people who would benefit from my various experiences in finance and business.”

“Overall a very good conference and very inspiring.”

“A very well organised day. The films were great and brought the subjects to life. Good diversity of technologies presented. A really superb day!”
