General Duties: Provide assigned specimens with excellent husbandry Maintain the exhibits, reserves, and Behind-the-Scenes areas. Perform morning and afternoon rounds to check specimens, exhibits, and reserve tanks for specimen health and proper operation of life support systems. Prepare daily ration of frozen, fresh, and dry commercial foods. Feed specimens as needed. Maintain exhibit aesthetics to departmental standards through regular cleaning of habitats and windows, hydro-cleaning gravel, cleaning overflow screens, and removing debris. Identify common diseases. Administer treatments as necessary. Assist in renovating tanks to incorporate new filters, pumps, heater, etc., and to rebuild habitats when needed. Identify and repair problems with life support systems. Participate in programs involving specimens in assigned exhibits (or as requested by managers) including, but not limited to, captive breeding and conservation programs. Train staff, volunteers, and others as necessary as it relates to work and animals in assigned areas. Answer questions from the public Maintain detailed records on all animals, animal health, behavior, water quality, and exhibit maintenance. Accomplish other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences, preferably with course work in parasitology, ichthyology, and/or other aquatic sciences is desired. One year of experience with aquatic animal husbandry, such as advanced hobbyist experience, research lab husbandry experience, professional aquarium experience, volunteer/intern experience, etc. is desired. Experience as a professional aquarist may be considered in place of some formalized course work.
