25/07/14 - 27/07/14
Interested in bats and want to do more than just use a heterodyne bat detector? This course will introduce you to a range of specialist techniques that help provide insights into bat biology and population structure.*
Slapton Ley provides an ideal location for bat fieldwork, and in previous years we've been lucky enough to catch some of the country's rarest species including lesser horseshoe and barbastelle. You will have the opportunity to see bats at close-quarters, and try your hand with some of the latest equipment. You will also practice using a range of bat detectors, including ANABAT, SM2 and EM3. By the end of the course you will have a working knowledge of how to analyse bat calls 'manually' and 'automatically', and understand the strengths and potential pitfalls of acoustic analysis.
*please note that long-term training is required before it is possible to obtain a licence for techniques involving capture or ringing.
