The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers. 

Position Summary: 

The Accountant will be a key member of the Ecuador Operations team and will be based in the Ecuador office.  Working closely with HQ Finance & Accounting, the Finance & Accounting Manager for Latin America, and other internal Rainforest Alliance staff, the Accountant will work to ensure the integrity of the Rainforest Alliance’s financial operations in Ecuador.  

Responsibilties: 
  • In close coordination with HQ Finance & Administration, Finance & Accounting Manager for Latin America, and outside auditors/accountants as required, ensures finance-related compliance including the filing of government reports;  
  • Implements and monitor internal controls in accordance with HQ Finance & Administration and local policies, standards and best practices, and provides related training;
  • Manages field office external relationships with banks, accounting/auditing firms, payroll providers, and insurance brokers;
  • Monitors field office cash flow and coordinates with internal Rainforest Alliance staff to prepare monthly estimates of cash flow;
  • Approves payment requests and prepares checks for signature, wires for release;
  • In coordination with HQ Finance & Administration and Human Resources, processes monthly payroll (in-house or through local payroll provider);
  • Maintains local accounting system and prepares and post journal entries;
  • Processes and reconciles approved advances, payment requests, invoices, petty cash requests and other expense transactions, and prepares field office accounting reports;
  • Coordinates the preparation of project specific audits;
  • Prepares financial reports for a variety of internal and external purposes including local accounting reports, requests for reimbursement to donors, and reports for HQ Finance & Administration;
  • Administers field office(s)-specific contracts;
  • Maintains field office(s) inventories and prepares depreciation schedules;
  • In coordination with HQ Human Resources, administers local insurance (liability, auto, etc.), as needed;
  • In coordination with IT Manager for Latin America, administers local IT;
  • Other duties as assigned. 
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field;
  • 3 - 5 years relevant experience, non-profit sector experience a plus;
  • Written and verbal fluency in English;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with accounting system software and Excel;
  • Detail, deadline and solution-oriented;
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; and
  • Ability to work successfully with employees from diverse backgrounds.
Salary: 

Commensurate with experience.
