Description

We are looking for a highly motivated and independent person to play an important role in conducting research for the Access to Information (ATI) in Africa project with WRI’s Institutions and Governance Program (http://www.wri.org/governance). The general objective of the ATI in Africa project is to better understand transparency models and sectoral approaches to ATI and accountability in Africa, and to inform policymakers and citizen groups engaged in building the infrastructure of transparency. The broader vision is to promote sustainable development and poverty reduction by establishing greater transparency in Africa, and providing citizens with accountable and responsive government.

 

Hours: Approximately 20 hours per week (more hours optional)

Status: Unpaid. Travel stipend available

Duration: 3 months, Flexible State Date with possibility of extension


Responsibilities:

Review national laws and regulations on access to information with a focus on government-held information on high-value natural resources (land, oil/gas, minerals, forests and water). Primary countries include Ghana, Uganda and South Africa (a secondary emphasis on Liberia, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia).

 

Other research tasks to be allocated based on team priorities and needs, and intern skills and interests.



Qualifications:

Applicants should be in pursuit of a master’s degree or law degree, or a recent graduate. Successful applicants will have a demonstrated interest in international environmental issues, developing countries, and an understanding of the role that legal and political systems play in governing environment and natural resources. Qualifications include:

  • Superior care and concern for detail
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel data tools
  • Knowledge of international geography and environmental issues
